Experience the Benefits of a Strategy Evolution in your Business, Career & Life
Evolution is defined as a process of continuous change from a lower, simple or worse to a higher, more complex or better state. “Strategy is an evolution, not a revolution”. This quote is so true when it comes to the plan for your business, career and life. I learned that first hand recently in our internal 2019 strategy & talent planning process when it was suggested that we change the name of our companies after 19 years of being in business. Candidly, the name change idea kind of freaked me out because I have been engaged in strategy work for 25+ years and here I am changing the name of our businesses. But our team, Board and closest advisors were unanimous that this was the right decision. Even brilliant some of them said.
Your strategy and plan for your business, career and life will evolve as you execute it as well. The marketplace and life itself teach us the lessons to evolve our plan and accomplish our professional and personal objectives. I used to get frustrated that the evolution of the plan always took longer than I wanted it too. I came to accept that the evolution of our strategy is not always on a perfect timetable but as long as it kept moving forward/evolving I was good with it. With that mindset, when we look back at the end of the year, to our satisfaction we see that our businesses have significantly advanced in the last 12 months.
Our strategy has significantly evolved since I founded the company 20 years ago. I started SM Advisors, Inc. (SM stands for Strategic Management) in 1999 as only a strategic planning firm. However, in the first year of helping companies with their strategy, the leader always asked me about his/her team or we would determine in the strategy that we needed to add a certain skill set to deliver the strategy. So late in the first year of our new company we added talent services and our differentiation of strategy and talent was created.
When I was working with leadership teams on their strategy & talent plans, I would encourage them to Stop Selling Vanilla Ice Cream and sell their Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream to be unique and different. Stop Selling Vanilla Ice Cream caught on, so I bought the domain name, trademarked it and published the book in 2012.
When completing the Stop Selling Vanilla Ice Cream Process hundreds of times with leadership teams, we discovered that many leaders were not passionate about their current position and career. They were not in their dream job. This discovery was validated by a Deloitte Study that determined that 12.7% of the working population described themselves as passionate about their work. It begs to ask the question: What are the other 87.3% doing? Probably just going to work. This sobering statistic inspired us to create the Stop Living Vanilla Ice Cream process which guides individuals on how to love what they do, excel at it and get rewarded for it.
With the launch of my 2nd Book Stop Living Vanilla Ice Cream in late 2019 we evolved the name of our speaking/workshop/book company to Stop The Vanilla, LLC and we changed the name of our strategy & talent consulting firm to STV Advisors, Inc. (STV = Stop the Vanilla). We consolidated two websites into one brand new website at www.stopthevanilla.com.
I would strongly recommend as your strategy evolves that you create a visual of it. We tweaked the Stop The Vanilla Platform Visual below at least 15 times as we went through our 2019 Strategy & Talent Planning Process. The visual was crucial in helping us understand our strategy to ensure that it was clear to our target markets as well.
